Apicoectomy
An apicoectomy is a specialized surgical procedure performed to save a tooth when conventional root canal treatment is not enough. When a root canal is performed, our goal is to clean the inside of the tooth. It’s then up to our body to heal any infection on the outside of the tooth. Our body usually heals these infections, but sometimes it doesn’t. At Crestview Endodontics, we carefully remove the tip of the tooth’s root and any surrounding infection, sealing the area to promote healing. This procedure helps preserve your natural tooth and maintain your oral health with minimal discomfort and a focus on lasting results.
What Is an Apicoectomy?
The video above illustrates this simple procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.
What Should I Expect After an Apicoectomy?
Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.
Why an Apicoectomy May Be Needed
- Persistent infection after a root canal
- Inflammation at the root tip
- Complex root structure or blocked canals
- Pain or swelling that does not resolve with previous treatment
